mySQL GUIs

I've been doing work with mySQL for the last week or so and forgot which GUIs I've used in the past to work with it. Apart from notepad here are some that I've looked at:

mySQL Administrator

link

The update from mySQL control center; this is easy to use and has a host of features including query browser, and a command line client. It's also free so this has to go on your download list.

SQL yog

link

This is great - again it's free and easy to use. One of the great things that this has is SQL compare - although this feature is only in the enterprise version.

Navicat

link

This is mySQLs answer to MSSQLs Enterprise Manager. With a nice query builder it a quick query creator.

NB: It's worth noting that i've just glanced at these products but I like what i've seen so far.

Joshua's Gravatar EMS makes great DB GUI tools. I use their free version for mySQL and Postgres.

Stephen Moretti's Gravatar There's also DBTools as well http://www.dbtools.com.br/EN/index.php, but to be honest you can't go far wrong with MySQL's own package of tools.

Julian Halliwell's Gravatar MySQL's own GUI tools seem to get recommended a lot, but although they work ok, I think they are poorly designed, at least on Windows. A specific example is that there are inner panels in the server manager where you have to scroll horizontally to see elements on the right, even with the window fully expanded (the panel should contract to fit). Perhaps they make more sense on other platforms, but to me on Windows it just doesn't look, feel and behave as you would expect.

I've been using Navicat happily for several years and find it well worth the money. EMS looks even better so might give that a try.

Julian, Have you updated your installation of the MySQL gui tools recently? Only reason I ask is I've just been through the Query browser and SQL Admin and can't find any horizontal scrolling. Although, I do vague recall something like this happening ages ago.

Julian Halliwell's Gravatar Hi Stephen

I'm looking at the MySQL Administrator 1.2.2 beta on my server and on the Backup > Advanced Options panel the content cuts off at the right so I can't read to end of each line. In fact it's worse than I said: there is *no* horizontal scroll so I can't read to the end of the line even if I could be bothered to scroll!

Maybe it's ok if you have a minimum 1024x768 resolution, but it's a remote server via TS so I keep it at 800x600 for performance (I don't need anymore for remote admin). It should contract though regardless of resolution, but not to even scroll is pretty poor. Free is nice, but I'd rather pay for quality.
