web 2.0 is what...

Web 2.0 it appears is nothing more that a service mark (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Service_mark) coined by oreilly (http://radar.oreilly.com/archives/2006/05/controversy_about_our_web_20_s.html) for "arranging and conducting live events".

So all this talk about open data, open applications etc should be named something else... suggestions please.

Thanks to Keith for pointing this out

You might want to read what Tim O'Reilly has to say on the matter. Some of the comments are worth reading.

Alex Farran's Gravatar Seriously, you only violate the terms of the service mark if you use it as the name of an event or conference. I'm sure the precise terms will be worked out soon enough. You may continue to use the term Web 2.0 in other contexts.

I've no problem with O'Reilly or their partners registering it's conference name as a service/trademark. It wasn't that sensible to start popularising it as a general term without mentioning that they were in the process of registering it as service mark. A case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand was doing perhaps?

Tony Petruzzi's Gravatar I have the perfect name!!! Let's call it BS. Seriously though, back in 1999 everyone and their mother was moving away from Javascript because of the browser compatability and to meet Section 508 compliance. Now that Web 2.0 and AJAX have become the buzz words, it's back again and being overly used. I can't help to think how the blind are going to view websites when you have all this JS controlling everything.

The only thing that is good about Web 2.0 is the move to get webmasters away from static layouts using tables and designing sites with dynamic layouts using CSS. Sure it's a pain and it takes ALOT longer to code, but in the end screen readers can read the site more easily.

Just my 2 cents. Can I get change please.
