Microsofts Surface computing - will it work?

After looking at microsofts surface computing product preview I have to say that I'm rather excited about it's prospects. I'm sure it will take a while for the shift in computing to change but with a richer multimedia world around us I think this is a great way forward. What are your thoughts?

Graham's Gravatar It's not overwhelmed the world so far.

This parody is quite accurate

TJ Downes's Gravatar I would have to disagree with Graham. I think many people are excited about this technology, I think certain industries are particularly excited. I do think people are rather skeptical, as they were of large flat screen TVs when they came out and were $12k. But as prices came down more people bought them and now everyone wants a flat screen LCD TV.

I think the parody is evidence that it has caught people's attention. I wouldn't mind having a "big ass table computer" in my living room :D

Jeremy French's Gravatar I think it's a cool idea, but the difference between this and the iPhone (besides the size), is in the UI, which Apple excells at and Microsoft doesn't. I can't find it now, but there was a demo video going around where you could actually hear the scraping sound as people drug their fingers over the surface. I think that's going to get annoying. Don't know whether that's requisite for the technology, or just a poor choice in implementation that can be fixed. Little details like this are what makes or breaks a technology's adoption rate.

Peter Boughton's Gravatar >> Microsofts Surface computing - will it work?
It could have done had Jeff Han gone to any other company.

Fortunately Microsoft Surface isn't the only option:

(soon as I get a big enough place I'm building me one of them)

Will's Gravatar Wow, that is some serious technology! £10,000 though? Rather hefty, especially since it does little more than view media content (oh, and playing with bubbles). I guess it has potential, but I cant personally see it happening soon, and I cant see
Microsoft leading the way - or rather I hope they dont.
By the way that same concept was used in iRobot, except his table was even bigger :P
