I'm a Mac newbee please help!

So a while back I blogged about getting a mac, well it's been a long time coming but I just bought a mac book pro 17". I'm a web developer so my next question is what the heck do I need on this thing and where can I get it from? Suggestion please? Also any other tips would be great.

Oh I should mention it's running on version 10.5 although i'm running an update from the site (maybe 10.5.1???)

Woohoo <-- sorry I'm a little excited!

17-inch MacBook Pro

James Wragg's Gravatar Hey Nick,

Welcome to world of Apple! Your going to go through hell for about 2/3 days :D

THEN, it'll make sense, and you'll never look back (8 month's ago I was a Mac virgin - and I love them so much I've just persuaded my mum to get one!).

Right, so these things off the top of my head:
Enable two finger scroll in System Preferences > Trackpad - now you don't need the scroll bars. Just put two fingers down and move about, it's great!
Two finger taps on the trackpad = right click.
OSX works best with keyboard too - Apple Q = quit the app your on, Apple W = close the current window (but won't shut down the app). Apple T in Safari = new tab. F9 - show all open windows. etc. you'll find what works for you :)

Installing apps is as simple as dragging the icon to the applications folder. if you want to uninstall it - drag out the icon to the trash can.

Go download & install:
QuickSilver - its a really powerful app launcher (there's some tutorials on youtube for the more powerful stuff you can do with it).
Coda is a great all in one web dev environment.
CSSEdit is possibly the best CSS editor I've ever used. So intuitive, makes css a snap and the interface is gorgeous.
MenuCalendarClock - a nice calendar widget that integrates with iCal
Adium - MSN, Yahoo messenger, AIM etc. in one.

Last but not least play with Photo Booth in Applications - it's good fun :-P

Hope that helps!

James (and Jackie say's hi!)

Andy Jarrett's Gravatar @jane I was just coming to let Nick know that :)

@nick its well worth the money for Snap X pro (which is normally $69) but go to Mac heist quickly. As I type this the offer is only running for another 1 day and 9 hours

Remy Sharp's Gravatar TextMate, TextMate, TextMate. It's the bread and butter of any developer on the Mac (well...in my view).

I made a list (everyone has a list, right?) of Mac apps for development some time ago (though it's got a couple of outdated apps in there):

Oh - and definitely get the MacHeist before it runs out tomorrow.

nick tong's Gravatar Thanks all for your hints and tips, it's great! I've got a small issue with getting coldfusion running on it but apart from that it's sweet - and the mac height deal was great (and good for charity :-) )
