Are meta tags dead?

Will Wilson just sent me a link to an interesting article which promoted me to ask this question:

Are meta tags dead?

According to Danny Sulliva it is:

... my advice about the meta keywords tag for ages has been simple. For those running large web sites or short on time, don't worry about it. The stress and time involved in trying to craft a tag was not worth it, in terms of the minor benefit it might bring. It is far more important for site owners to instead concentrate on creating good title tags for their pages, a key page element that has consistently shown it can help with ranking across all major crawlers.

Now this article is rather old but the question is still valid... your thoughts?

PS this is my three hundredth post

Paul Silver's Gravatar Google has always ignored meta keywords, but does use the meta description in the snippet from your page in the search results under certain (slightly obscure) circumstances. Yahoo uses mis-spellings in your meta keywords to help match your pages to mis-spelt searches.

So: meta description is still worth filling out, and it's worth a little thought on some meta keywords if you care about maximising your search engine traffic.

Tom Mollerus's Gravatar I agree with Paul that the meta description is useful since it shows up in Google's organic results. As for meta keywords? They are absolutely dead, dead, dead. They were so abused that they're now ignored. And now that search engine spiders are smart enough to index the keywords in your pages for themselves, they're unnecessary as well.
