web 2.0 is what...

Web 2.0 it appears is nothing more that a service mark (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Service_mark) coined by oreilly (http://radar.oreilly.com/archives/2006/05/controversy_about_our_web_20_s.html) for "arranging and conducting live events".

So all this talk about open data, open applications etc should be named something else... suggestions please.

Thanks to Keith for pointing this out

DVT - not just for flights

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) or eDVT has come into the spot light here in the UK and I thought that its worth a post.

An IT worker who collapsed with a blood clot after sitting at his desk for hours has warned of the danger of DVT.

I know myself that I've spent hours sat at my computer without budging. I see this as a good excuse to have more coffee breaks.

I suggest that you whack on some tunes and dance those feet

The Telephone Preference Service (TPS)

Now for an email slightly of topic but I thought I would share.  I very rarely use my home phone, I’m a mobile person; so when it does ring generally it’s from people who I don’t won’t to here from like marketing or sales people.  Well now you can stop there calls from visiting this website: http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/

A great way to stop unwanted  telephone calls - oh you can also register your mobile as well :D

Make poverty History 2005

2005 is a year for campaigners to remember. The unprecedented level of global campaigning on poverty in 2005 has been fantastic.

Thank you for playing your part in MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY. You were part of the biggest ever anti-poverty movement and in doing so you made history.

In its focus on trade justice, more and better aid and dropping debt, the campaign raised awareness of the global impact of economic injustices. It has highlighted two key points:

  • Poverty is not inevitable.
  • It is possible to make poverty history if political leaders have the will to do so.

The Make Poverty History coalition believes in progress through democracy and has shown that governments can deliver real change when faced with such public demand - change that can mean the difference between life and death for millions of people.

There is little doubt that the positive political decisions taken during the year would not have been taken without your passionate commitment and the commitment of campaigners all over the world. If governments follow through on their promises without imposing harmful conditions, millions of lives that would have been lost could now be saved.

The fight against poverty continues and your passion and energy and the momentum of 2005 will fuel future campaigning for the years to come. The call to Make Poverty History has inspired a generation: 2005 marks the beginning of something incredible.

Thanks,
The Make Poverty History Team

Send your own Christmas card to the G8 leaders

CLICK here to send your own Christmas card to the G8 leaders to tell them they must keep their solemn promises.

Remind them that if they do not, people will die of poverty, yes, but worse, they will die from broken promises.

Don't let them tell you anything else.

Ridiculous petrol prices

Fed up paying ridiculous petrol prices?   Save money with a free Pipeline Card!

All those involved in the oil business are getting their cut from the inflated prices we’re paying on the forecourts – the oil-well owners, refineries, filling stations. On top of that, the government siphons off nearly 70p per litre in tax.

These organisations behave as if petrol and diesel were luxury goods, and driving was a pastime. We are not ‘motorists’ as the media like to call us. We are teachers, nurses, professional and business people, parents. We drive because we have to.

I have recently registered at the following website http://www.pipelinecard.org/ which has been set up to secure cheaper petrol for its members. It's free to join and expects to deliver discounts of between 5p and 10p a litre on petrol & diesel.

White Band Day 3

WHITE BAND DAY 3 - SATURDAY 10th DECEMBER

Ahead of the all-important World Trade Organisation (WTO) Ministerial meeting in Hong Kong next week, people across the country will be wearing their white bands & planning events to highlight the fact that we cannot make poverty history unless rich country governments deliver Trade Justice at the WTO meeting.

There are 3 simple things you can do to add your voice to millions of others around White Band Day 3.

  1. VOTE FOR TRADE JUSTICE
  2. EMAIL PETER MANDELSON
  3. DOWNLOAD THE WHITE BAND DAY 3 TOOLKIT

Snowdome Milton Keynes (UK)

I have been to the snowdome in Milton Keynes a few times and I have to say that normally it is rather good.  Okay you do not get the long slopes that you do on the mountains but hey, we I am in England after all.

I was, I have to say, very disappointed with the result of last nights performance.  I found out after travelling 3 hours in a car to get there that the conditions where disastrous.  The snow was so stodgy that you could get any speed up.  I spent the hour doing nothing at all apart from wishing that I hadn’t spend three hours in a car getting their.  There where a few rails out but without speed what can you do on those really.

I decide to have a word and found out that they had had a chemical leak.  To there credit they did give me and the others I was travelling with a free double session next time we go (which will have to be after two weeks as it will take that long to recover). One this that got my back up though was the fact that while I was standing there compiling other people where coming in to use the slopes… where they telling people as and when they came in that the conditions where bad..  No! they let the hand over there hard earned cash…

i'll let you know next time i go and use my voucher if they have redeemed themselves...
